Description
Gary Green Bog
Also known as Larsonite and McDermitt Green Jasper, Gary Green Bog is petrified swamp bog. During the Miocene Age (11-14 million years ago) wood, algae, swamp vegetation, and mud were covered by volcanic ash and eventually fossilized by silica-rich minerals. The bog material gets its green color from traces of iron, aluminum, potassium, sodium, and calcium. Any brown/beige/red tones come from the vegetation burned by the volcanic ash. Gary Green Bog is found in Southern Oregon near the town of McDermitt. |
